Through My Lens
The ground shock with the distant boom.
I yelled for the kids to take shelter in the closet under the stairs. I ushered them along the hallway glancing out the window as we passed. Hurry I said. My oldest was the last one in. His eyes met mine with knowledge a thirteen-year-old should never have. My breath caught in my chest as he closed the door, he and I knew it would be the last time a saw him.
Turning away I ran and bust through the door onto the front lawn. I froze at the sight before me.
My fists clenched at my sides as anger consumed me. What had they done? Then despair bowed my head at the knowledge that I would never see my babies grown. Never watch them find love. Never hold a child of theirs in my arms. Never feel the weight of my husband next to me again in our bed. The endless Nevers rushed through my mind.
Looking up as I waited for the shock wave. With my last breath I prayed that man would someday learn………no one wins in a war………
